The Town of Aurora is proactively addressing its parkland deficit to ensure residents have sufficient green spaces to enjoy as the community expands. Recently, the Town acquired two properties to further this initiative.
In December 2023, a 16-acre property on the west side of Yonge Street was purchased. Also, the Town recently acquired an approximately 4-acre property on George Street from the York Region District School Board for $10,722,000.
The 20 acres of land were purchased for a total of $13,892,000 and are funded through Parkland Reserve. Residents will soon have the chance to offer their input on the development of park spaces in both locations.

NEWS: Town acquires Yonge Street greenspace for more than $3.2 million
January 4, 2024, The Auroran: “A parcel of greenspace has been secured by the Town of Aurora for $3.23 million dollars. The deal, which closed December 15, includes the lot at 14378 Yonge Street, 2,400 square metres of which is the location of the Aurora Pet Cemetery, a long-closed and somewhat forgotten burial place which has seen renewed interest in recent decades as a historic site.” Read more…
Hmmm- wonder if this was why the town turned down the proposed Men’s Shetler next door to this property..

I am happy to see the Town purchase the George Street school property, be sad to see the school building torn down and not repurposed.
